Deputy Minister Petar Kirov gave start to the modernization of the Central Railway Station

Over 62 million lev will be invested in the modernization of the Central Railway Station in Sofia. That was said by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Petar Kirov, during the ceremony on the start of the construction works. The event was attended by the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, the Executive Director of the National Railway Infrastructure Company, Milcho Lambrev, representatives of the contractor Association on Obligations and Contracts Act “Union Glavbolgarstroy – Sofia Central Station” and others.

"The station was built more than 40 years ago and since then it has not been substantially renovated", said Deputy Minister Petar Kirov. He added that the modernization of the Central Railway Station in Sofia is part of the coherent program of MTITC for improving intermodality and rail infrastructure.

"We are approaching 60% of the financial implementation of tOperational Programme “Transport”.Almost 2.3 billion lev have been repaid to the beneficiaries",said Petar Kirov.

At the end of the official ceremony, Deputy Minister Kirov put into a time capsule a message for the future generations, which after the completion of the project will be exhibited in the Museum of NRIC.

After the rehabilitation, Sofia Central Station will be completely renovated, corresponding to the energy efficiency requirements. The windows and doors will be replaced, the building will be fireproof, and it will allow for the provision of essential services as well as a heated and comfortable waiting area. People with reduced mobility will be provided access to all the premises of the station.
